How did it all start?

In 1989, Charlene Alexander and Sue Ross organized an art show at the Inuvialuit Corporate Centre in Inuvik, bringing together some two dozen artists from different communities in the Beaufort Delta. Indigenous artists had been sending their work to the south for years, and many of them had never had the chance before to attend an exhibition where their own work was on display.

This was the start of the Great Northern Arts Festival.
